Elements of Design, Accessorize!

How to Use Accessories in Interior Design

Choose accessories that complement the overall design scheme of your interior.

Accessories add to the aesthetic value of a room, and must convey your personality and tastes. Simple additions such as wall art, throw pillows, antiques, sculptures, keepsakes, collectibles and memorabilia give the space that "wow" factor.

1. Find objects that represent your personality.  Look through your collections and keepsakes, as well as other objects that you've accumulated over the years.

2. Consider your room's style. Keep within the style constraints of your interior design. Accessories should support their environment's aesthetic - not work against it.

3. Explore your display options. Add shelves, fireplace mantles, couches, tables, couches, floors, countertops, pedestals and window ledges. Creative display options like bowls, shadow boxes, trays and curios are interior design accessories in themselves.

4. Create groupings. Small, singular objects visually disappear in a room. Grouping adds weight and visual significance to diminutive interior design accessories.

Choose objects with a common design element. Groups of random objects should be associated by either color, theme or size.
Stagger object heights. To create visual interest, group objects with differing heights: high, medium and low.

5. Choose accessories in colors that complement your design.  Contrasting colors stand out and provide a visual pop, while monochromatic colors will blend in and create a soothing affect. Consider the overall aesthetic of your room and choose the colors of your interior design accessories accordingly.

6. Vary textures to create visual interest.

7. Use accessories that are in scale with the room. Too-large accessories or groupings will dominate a small space, while too-small accessories may disappear in an expansive space.

8. Begin by placing the largest accessory, then work your way down in size. After you place each additional accessory, step back and assess the arrangement for clutter. Regroup/replace items as necessary, until you are satisfied with the placement of your interior design accessories.
